Motorway rape incident: Punjab police seeks help of other provinces to arrest accused
- Police have failed to nab suspect Abid despite the passage of more than a week since the incident was reported on September 9.
(Karachi) Punjab police has shared details of prime suspect in Motorway rape incident, Abid Ali, with law enforcement personnel of other provinces in a bid to help arrest him, ARY News reported on Friday. The culprit is still at large.
As per details, Punjab police have failed to arrest accused Abid despite the passage of more than a week since the incident was reported on September 9. The police shared all relevant details of the absconding suspect with the police departments of other provinces, seeking their help in arresting him.
In addition, the police also established check posts at the entry and exits of the province to prevent possible cross-border movement of the suspect.
On September 17, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) blacklisted Abid Ali. The law enforcement agencies feared that Abid might escape from the country so they requested the FIA to put his name on the blacklist. The investigation agency had already sent the data of the accused to airports and border security checkpoints across the country.
Earlier, Punjab police arrested Shafqat in Motorway rape incident. Shafqat is a friend of prime suspect Abid and has confessed his involvement in the motorway gang-rape case.
The accused was nabbed during a raid by police in Dipalpur. Shafqat was arrested in light of accused Waqarul Hassan's disclosures.
During the course of interrogation, suspect Shafqat transpired that he along with Abid had planned to commit robbery on the Motorway. He said they were drunk and under the influence of alcohol.
He highlighted that accused Abid broke the window of the car in which the victim was seated and injured his arm.
He revealed after robbing the woman, they took her and children out of the car and took them in the bushes. There they sexually assaulted the woman and fled.
Shafqat told the investigators that they are habitual criminals and had committed robberies and are also involved in rape incidents. He said after committing the offence, they would escape to Kacha area to hide and evade arrest.
