ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the week ended September 10, 2020, recorded an increase of 0.37 percent over the last week due to rise in prices of food items, ie, chicken (16.74 percent), moong (6.02 percent), mash (3.11 percent), eggs (2.10 percent) and wheat flour bag (1.48 percent). According to the latest data, released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the SPI went up from 136.11 points during the week ended September 3, 2020 to 136.62 points during the week under review. The year-on-year trend depicts an increase of 9.04 percent with majority of the items increased mainly chilies powder (86.31 percent), potatoes (73.75 percent), moong (41.50 percent), tomatoes (36.60 percent), eggs (34.76 percent), mash (34.75 percent, sugar (24.73 percent), masoor (24.39 percent), bread (18.80 percent), match box (18.03 percent), wheat flour bag (17.33 percent), vegetable ghee 1kg (17.32 percent), gur (17.03 percent), long cloth (16.51 percent), vegetable ghee 2.5kg (15.55 percent) and rice irri-6/9 (15.45 percent), while a major decrease was observed in the price of onions (32.22 percent, chicken (20.66 percent), diesel (16.10 percent), garlic (10.96 percent), and petrol (8.11 percent).

The weekly SPI covers 17 urban centres and 51 essential items for all expenditure groups.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 22 (43.13 percent) items increased, 6 (11.77 percent) items decreased, and 23 (45.10 percent) items remained constant, according to the provisional figures released by the PBS.

The SPI for the consumption groups up to Rs17,733, from Rs17,733 to Rs22,888, Rs22,889 to Rs29,517, Rs29,518 to Rs44,175 and above Rs44,175 per month increased by 0.13 percent, 0.23 percent, 0.30 percent, 0.37 percent, and 0.43 percent respectively.

The commodities, which recorded increase in their average price include chicken farm broiler (16.74 percent), moong (6.02 percent), mash (3.11 percent), eggs (2.10 percent), gram (1.88 percent), Georgette (average quality) (1.57 percent), wheat flour bag (1.48 percent), masoor (1.15 percent), gur (0.76 percent), match box (0.7 percent), mutton (0.67 percent), LPG (0.62 percent), mustard oil (0.61 percent), milk fresh (0.59 percent), curd (0.53 percent), rice basmati broken (0.44 percent), bread plain (0.35 percent), cooked daal (0.28 percent), powdered milk (0.06 percent), cooking oil (0.04 percent), vegetable ghee (0.03 percent), and beef with bone (0.03 percent).

The commodities, which recorded decrease in their average price include tomatoes (6.37 percent), garlic (2.57 percent), bananas (1.80 percent), potatoes (0.98 percent), onions (0.57 percent), and sugar refined (0.35 percent). Prices of the commodities that observed no change during the week under review include rice irri-6/9, vegetable ghee Dalda/Habib or other superior quality, salt powdered (National/Shan), chilies powder National, tea Lipton Yellow Label, cooked beef, tea prepared, cigarettes, long cloth 57" Gul Ahmed/Al Karam, shirting, lawn printed Gul Ahmed/Al Karam, gents sandal, gents sponge chappal, ladies sandal, electricity charges, gas charges, firewood, energy saver, Sufi washing soap, petrol super, hi-speed diesel, telephone call charges, and toilet soap.
