The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has awarded the construction of three pedestrian bridges project at Rs 48 million cost to Highway Mechanical Complex (HMC). "HMC would complete the project into two phases. In the first phase, two pedestrian bridges at Faisal avenue would be constructed, and in the second phase, HMC would build another pedestrian bridge on Kashmir Highway", an official source told Business Recorder.
He said that the CDA Chairman, Engineer, Farkhand Iqbal, has directed CDA's finance directorate to release funds to HMC in order to ensure immediate construction of two pedestrian bridges. The major reason for delay in construction of third pedestrian bridge is growing financial crises in CDA, he disclosed.
He said that federal ombudsman had also expressed concern over the inordinate delay in the construction of pedestrian bridges after receiving public complaints. The federal ombudsman has also asked CDA to construct pedestrian bridges as soon as possible to curtail public problems, he said.
Source said that the CDA's engineering wing around one year ago had planned construction of one overhead bridge and pedestrian bridge at Faisal Avenue and another pedestrian bridge at Kashmir Highway. The CDA's special projects directorate also prepared a PC-1 of Rs 48 million for construction of three pedestrian bridges.
He said that due to delay in the construction of pedestrian bridges at Faisal Avenue and Kashmir Highway, the traffic jams and road accidents have become a routine matter. Several accidents occurred at Faisal Avenue as residents of sector G-7 and G-8 cross the road during rush hours. Source said according to a survey, over 25,000 vehicles cross Zero Point per hour from four directions during peak hours and the traffic load is increasing with every passing day.
