Pakistan Customs is celebrating International Customs day on 26th January, 2012. I extend my warm felicitations to all officers and officials of the department on this special day. The concepts of Customs operations are developed in accordance with the latest economic developments taking place around the world.
Role of Customs is not restricted to collecting duty and taxes on goods and guarding sea and land frontiers, but also involves trade facilitation and economic development and attraction of foreign investment. There is a need to cope with the changing developments in international trade and Customs has devised a well planned strategy beginning with the development of a skilled human resource and modern cargo clearance system, which is the most important element of development process. In line with this, Pakistan Customs has modernised its procedures and processes to suit with the developments in trade and in keeping with international customs agreements.
The theme chosen for this year is "Borders divide, Customs connects", which is aimed at promoting connectivity of persons, institutions and information. Endeavours of Pakistan Customs are helping in un-impeded and lawful flow of cargo/ and passenger traffic. Department's commitment is laudable in fighting all types of illicit activities which affect society and its economy.
Rapid pace of globalisation in recent years has reshaped international trade scenario and demands not only consolidated dialogue between jurisdictions, but also nurturing of a sustainable partnership with the business community. The connectivity approach has prompted customs organizations around the globe to increase collaboration and Pakistan's commitment is appreciating in this regard. Reduction in tariffs and facilitative approach of the department has proved as an impetus to kick start the stagnant economy. I wish that the department will continue to follow the path of modernisation and trade facilitation and keeps on playing its role in the progress of the country.
