558 students awarded degrees at MUET convocation

Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET) conferred academic degrees on 558 students at its 14th annual convocation held at Jamshoro on Saturday. As many as 11 gold and 21 silver medals were also awarded to the faculty toppers, best graduates and the position holders at the ceremony which was presided over by Adviser to Governor Sindh Dr S. M Qureshi.
The recipients of the degrees included 7 doctor of philosophy scholars, 36 master of engineering students and 515 bachelors in different disciplines of engineering including architecture. Ghulam Mustafa Mahar, Muhammad Zaman Jamali and Sehar Pirwani were declared best graduates in the Faculty of Engineering while Hiba Pervez Arain, Hina Azam Syed, Ali Asghar Manjotho and Dileep Kumar Menghwar in the Faculty of Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering.
In the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering Aroosa Qaimkhani won the best graduate recognition. Likewise, the top faculty students included Umaima Saleem Memon of Faculty of Engineering, Hina Azam Syed of Faculty of Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering and Intikhab Ali Tashkhun in the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
In his message Governor of Sindh Dr Ishratul Ebad, who is also the chancellor of the university, congratulated the recipients of the degrees and wished them a bright career in the future. "I advise you to be sheet anchors of your strong belief based on human reason and rationale, and decorate your personality with reward of appreciation and eulogy from within hearts of those who are less privileged," the message read.
Sindh Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq in his message expressed the hope that after achieving the milestone of academic qualification the students would endeavour in their professional lives as to employ the skills for collective benefits and personal development."Unless you don't give a clear distinction to the interests of your nation over your own you can't serve in the truest sense," he added.
Addressing as chief guest Adviser to Governor Sindh Dr S. M Qureshi said that primary and secondary education was not satisfactory. "Specially, the students lack knowledge of the science and technology subjects," he observed. Therefore, he suggested, there was a need to improve the learning and practical application of the science and technology education following the footsteps of the leading schools in the private sector. "The society and parents will also have to play their role as to encourage the children in that regard," he added.
Vice Chancellor of MUET Professor Dr Abdul Qadeer Rajput said the university was constantly producing more graduates and PhD scholars every year as a result of the untiring efforts of the faculty and the university administration. The vice chancellor said that the university regularly holds seminars, which were addressed by the experts of the relevant fields including those who come from the international universities. "We have put the research work on priority to bring on a par the education system with the international standard," he added.
According to him, the graduates from MUET could find job opportunity in any corner of the world as the university has the ISO certification, which bestows global recognition to the university. Dr Rajput informed that the MUET would hold an international conference on the subject "Energy, environmental and sustainable development" in February, 2012, followed by another similar event in March, 2012, which would be a mutli-titled conference. He said that the university strictly adheres to the policy of merit without which standardised learning of global quality was not possible.
Advising the students about their future pursuits, he said: "Do not waste your time, energy and resources on any useless activity. Rather, you should take keen interest in the studies, learn communication skills and enhance abilities to express ideas clearly and emphatically."
