An anodyne and close scrutiny of the present situation reveals that almost all the ailments afflicting our body-politic and challenges presently confronting the nation - to a greater extent - owe their existence to this unenviable and blatant affront to the vision of the Quaid. Sadly, the military-judiciary alliance of the past years also seems intact and kicking as is manifest from the recent developments which threaten to derail the democratic system.
The Quaid must be restless in his grave to see what has happened to Pakistan as a result of the indiscretions of the military dictators and the shenanigans of the politicians. In the backdrop of these events, one can hardly take issue with the statement by the Prime Minister in the parliament that democracy should not suffer because of the mistakes of the politicians and that all the institutions of the state should respect the principle of trichotomy of powers as enshrined in the constitution.
The moving of the resolution in the parliament aimed at reiterating the will of the public representatives to uphold the ascendancy of the parliament and show its unflinching resolve to defend and nurture democracy is a timely initiative and a warning to the non-democratic forces. It is said that the worst kind of democracy is better than a benign dictatorship.
The maxim is irrefutably vindicated by the fact that democracy is a global culture and the nations that are on top of the world achieved those coveted positions through democracy. Democracy has its own vulnerabilities and strengths. The vulnerabilities can cause timely hiccups and frustrations but its strengths can always correct those aberrations provided the process is allowed to continue uninterrupted through adherence to the constitution. The only way we can grapple with the acrimonious circumstances that threaten our very existence and progress as a nation is through strengthening the democratic system.
