With the objective to ensure safe road environment after inculcating awareness of traffic rules among the citizens, Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) fined around 5,49,328 vehicles during the last year generating Rs 103 millions revenue.
According to the data, 38,232 motorists were fined for using mobile phones during driving, 62,054 motorcyclists for not using helmet, 54,359 motorists for not using seat belts, 5,291 for driving vehicles without licences, 10,575 vehicles fined for having tinted glasses, 32,619 for violation of signals, 23,421 for parking vehicles in no parking areas, 37,518 for careless driving, 9,288 vehicles fined for being on road without registration plates, 28,809 for neglecting other road laws, 5586 for driving vehicles without permit, 17,580 for route violation, 5091 for using pressure horns, 13790 for taking wrong turn and 14,626 for lane violation.
Similarly, 6,666 transport vehicles were fined for carrying passengers in a dangerous way, 5,163 for having defective lights, 6,911 for driving on one way, 5629 for driving on the wrong side of the road, 23720 for obstructing traffic, 15,226 for overloading, 8659 for over speeding, 13,349 for parking on bus stops, 4855 for parking on Zebra crossing, 1,060 for emitting smoke, 14017 for turning where U-turn is prohibited, 8,152 for using high beam and 67,346 for miscellaneous violations.
During the year 2011, ITP issued 5, 49,328 traffic violation tickets through which Rs 100,385,700 revenue was generated. Help, Service and Equal application of law are the operational codes of the Islamabad traffic Police and ITP believes in community participation and community-based policing.
Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP) has become model of excellence through its service oriented policies and further endeavouring to come up to the expectations of the general public by ensuring traffic discipline in the city, said Senior Superintendent Police (Traffic) Dr Moeen Masood here on Thursday while reviewing the overall performance report of the ITP during the last year.
Dr Moeen said ITP had the image of corruption-free and people-friendly force through hard work and eliminating the curse of corruption from the organisation. He said that ITP provided help to hundreds of motorists on roads due to some mechanical or other problems during last year. The SSP said there is no alternate to life and ITP is making extra-ordinary efforts to avoid mishaps on roads which bring miseries to the family members of the deceased.
"Elimination of VIP culture and equal application of law are the operational codes of the ITP which has become the model of excellence for all law enforcement agencies in the country," he added. The SSP (Traffic) said education teams of ITP visit public and private organisations, trade and transport unions, universities, colleges and schools to inculcate road safety through training. The SSP (Traffic) Dr Moeen Masood said that fine tickets are issued not as a punitive measure but the purpose is to make citizens more law abiding to ensure safety to their own lives on roads.
