Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Saturday that elections "are part of democracy, and PPP believes in elections and sanctity of votes". Speaking at the annual reception of Lahore Bar Association, he said: "We are from the people and come through elections and believe in democracy, and we always faced difficulties and jails and never had any underhand deal with the dictators."
He said independence of judiciary and media is due to democracy in the country and a consensus constitution given by Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto has been restored in its original shape. He said judiciary and media are independent and civil society is active and vibrant. He said they are working for the integrity and betterment of the country, following the teachings of Zulifqar Ali Bhutto. He said lawyers are the real representatives of Quaid-e-Azam and real strength of the democracy in the country. He said it was difficult to keep the country intact but the consensus constitution given and restored in its original shape by PPP keeping the country intact.
He said: "We believe in democracy and respect all institutions". He said: Those who say we don't respect the institutions have some misconception. We restored the constitution and are protector of it and believe in the respect of institutions". He said PPP is a federal, not regional, party and has its roots in all provinces in Pakistan and serving, and would continue to serve the country.
The PM announced a colony for the lawyers in the city and also promised to complete the Benazir Hospital in the city. He also announced 10 percent quota for the lawyers in the departments of Evacuee Trust Property Board and give a cheque of 2.5 million for treatment of a bar member. Among others, Punjab Governor Latif Khosa, ETPB Chairman Asif Hashmi and President of Bar Shahzad Ahsan were also present.
