A calm and composed Dr Babar Awan has decided that he won't tender an unconditional apology to the court and that he will defend himself in response to show cause notices that he has received for allegedly ridiculing higher judiciary. "Awan would own whatever he has said in front of media and would explain to the apex court that in no manner he ridicule the judiciary," a source close to Babar Awan said.
An 11-member bench of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on January 5 adjourned the hearing of ZAB Reference. The court issued on the same day a show cause notice to Awan for ridiculing the superior judiciary in media. It asked Awan to submit a reply by January 9, explaining why his licence should not be revoked.
"We cannot proceed further in the presidential reference until the court is respected," the Chief Justice stated while expressing his deep sense of frustration and dismay. On the directions of the CJP, the footage of Awan's controversial talk with media was played in an open court in the presence of senior members of legal fraternity, including president Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Yasin Azad, vice chairman Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) Latif Afridi, Aitzaz Ahsan and Abdul Hafeez Pirzada. However, sources further claimed that Awan's media talk was not aimed at ridiculing the judiciary at all.
