Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Saturday fixed the hearing of a matter relating to a press conference of Babar Awan that he addressed along with two other PPP ministers for January 4, 2012. At the press conference, Awan reportedly denounced the Supreme Court (SC) order of December 1 on Memogate scandal. A two-member bench of the Supreme Court comprising Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan and Justice Athar Saeed will take up the matter.
In the pursuance of SC short order of Memogate scandal on December 30, the Registrar put up replies of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani in relation to press conference of Babar Awan and others in the CJP Chamber where the Chief Justice considered it appropriate to take up the matter on judicial side and fixed the matter for hearing.
"After a perusal of transcription of the press conference, addressed by Dr Babar Awan, Sr. ASC in presence of three others on December 1, 2011 as well as reply/reaction of the Prime Minister of December 23 and 26 of 2011 filed through Maulvi Anwar-ul-Haq, Attorney General for Pakistan, it is considered appropriate to take up this matter on judicial side. Thus, office is directed to place the matter before Bench No VII on January 04, 2012 for proceedings in accordance with law," the CJP stated.
