Chairman All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (Aptma), Mohsin Aziz, has rejected any government intervention to the free market mechanism of cotton trade, manoeuvred by a strong lobby of ginners and cotton hoarders in the name of cotton farmers.
He said the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) estimates suggest that the country has produced 12.58 million bales of cotton. A total of 11.5 million bales, about 95 percent of total production, have been lifted from the farmers until December 15. Rest of 1.2 million bales would be lifted soon, which means that only 5 percent of cotton production is with the cotton farmers at present.
According to the Chairman Aptma, textile industry has procured 68 percent cotton until 15 December and it has gone up to 72 percent till date. Therefore, the ginners and hoarders should not be allowed to make the government hostage in the name of cotton farmers.
