Dow University of Health Sciences would soon establish a Research Centre in National Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology at Ojha Campus for the carrying out research and epidemiological data of communicable and non-communicable diseases prevalent in the country. It will be the only research centre in the country specifically dedicated for medical research. It will conduct Research of diseases and problems of public health importance in the country.
This was announced by Vice-Chancellor, Dow University of Health Sciences, while presenting the recommendations of International Diabetes Conference held today at DMC Campus. Professor Dr Samad Shera and Dr Zaman Shaikh were also present on the occasion.
He further said that the Research Centre is the need of the country. The epidemiological data from this Research Centre will be presented to government and stakeholders for the prevention of the diseases. The overall vision of the Research Centre is to reduce risk, morbidity and mortality related to different diseases including diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and obesity through effective focus on achieving results.
He said further Pakistan Medical and Dental Council approved 50 seats for Dow International Dental College. Talking about diabetes, he said that there is increasing prevalence of diabetes in Pakistan. Early emergence of the diabetes complications includes blindness, kidney failure, gangrene, stroke and heart attacks leading to early morbidity and mortality. Diabetes is also an enormous and increasing burden on health care.
Giving the recommendation of the Conference, Professor Dr Samad Shera said that our strategic goals is to drive change at all levels, from local to global, to prevent diabetes and increase access to essential medicines and to develop and encourage best practice in diabetes policy, management and education. He stressed on developing tools to disseminate relevant information on diabetes treatment, management and prevention.
