Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government on Friday launched two-week special awareness campaign regarding rights of children and women in the society. The directorate of social welfare & women development has chalked a comprehensive plan for holding awareness seminar, workshops, and sensitisation sessions in this regard, said Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Social Welfare & Women Development, Sitara Ayaz while speaking at a seminar regarding launching of campaign at Peshawar Press Club.
She said that the drive's major objective is to create awareness among women about their rights. She added that the government's prime responsibility is to provide better health, education facilities and equal rights to women in the society. Ms Sitara Ayaz informed that the campaign has formally been launched in rest of the world, adding that the provincial government is also going to launch 16 days campaign in this regard, which will focus to create awareness regarding the women rights in the society.
She said that the women have the right to avail equal opportunities in the society with provision of health and education facilities, but the gender discrimination against women remained, which was disappointing sign for the entire nation. The provincial Minister said that the unequally distribution and discriminatory treatment was creating sense of deprivation among women, despite of their huge contribution in development and progress of the country.
Unfortunately, she observed, trend of violence against women and mistreatment still exists in the province, wherein the ratio of domestic violence has grown. Similarly, she added, sexual harassment and domestic violence in the province is being reported by media as a routine matter. Head of provincial women commission, Zubaida Khatoon, Idrees Kamal, social activist, Zar Musazai and a large number of representatives from different welfare and right organisations were present on the occasion.
