Sindh growers demand increase in wheat support price

The executive committee of Sindh Chamber of Agriculture has demanded of the government to fix the support price of wheat at Rs 1,250 per 40 kg instead of Rs 1,050 per 40 kg.
In a meeting held here on Friday under the chair of Dr Syed Nadeem Qamar, the Chairman of the Chamber, the participants observed cent percent increase in prices of seeds, fertilisers, pesticides, diesel and agriculture implements during last one years therefore, the support price of wheat for the year 2012 may be fixed at Rs 1,250 per 40 kg.
The meeting appreciated the reduction of prices of urea from Rs 1,580 per bag to Rs 1,480 per bag and appealed to the government to ensure sale of urea according to newly fixed rates and take action against those involved in overcharging. The meeting also demanded that subsidy of Rs 25 billion to be spent for import of Urea fertiliser should be spent for the welfare of the growers and the imported urea should directly be provided to them so that they could directly benefit from this step of the government.
The meeting also demanded of the government to initiate action against the sugar mills, which fail to start crushing in the coming month. The meeting expressed concern over failure of clearing stagnant water from farmland of Chamber and Jhando Mari Talukas of Tando Allahyar district. Mir Murad Ali Khan Talpur, Mir Imdad, Zahid Hussain Bhurgari, Dr Shahnawaz Shah, Syed Aijaz Nabi Shah, Mir Abdul Karim Talpur, Misri Mallah and Nabi Bux Sittiyo and others attended the meeting.
