The import of cellular phones has gone up by $23.231 million in October this year because of the rising demand for the advanced handsets in the country, according to the mobile phones importers. The country has imported $55.574 million of cellular phones in October this year, as compared to the mobile phones import of $32.343 million in October 2010, showing a rise of $23.231 million or 71.83 percent, according to the official statistics.
Importers said that the new advanced handsets particularly the ones made by China had a greater appeal amongst the masses because they were low-cost as compared to the branded cellular phone sets with the same features and applications. "Chinese manufactured handsets are very good to use, which are now available countrywide at a low cost," said a mobile phone traders at Saddar Electronics Market, Hamid Ali, adding that the public had now a big choice for the touch- screen handsets.
He said the branded touch screen phones were too expensive for low-income earners, who preferred to buy one which had nearly the same kind of features. "The branded handsets, which have advanced features are very expensive for a common man," he observed. The country's import of cellular phones was $219.884 million during July-October 2011 period as compared to the mobile phones import during the same period of last fiscal year 2010, depicting a rise of 82.494 million or 60.5 percent, the statistics say.
However, the mobile phones import declined by 5.81 percent to $3.426 million in October as compared to the handsets import of $59 million during September 2011, the statistics added. Hamid said that there was a huge difference in terms of price if a branded mobile set was compared to a Chinese one. He pointed out that the snatched Chinese made handsets could not be resolved in the local market for their low-priced.
