A constitutional petition has been filed in Supreme Court (SC), seeking the setting up of a high-level commission to investigate the 'Memogate'. Advocate Supreme Court Tariq Asad filed the petition on Monday under Article 184 (3) of the Constitution, making the Federation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Interior, Chief of Army Staff, DG Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and Hussain Haqqani, Ambassador of Pakistan to US, as respondents.
The petitioner sought to direct the federal government to hold an inquiry against Hussain Haqqani and others. He further requested the court to terminate the services of Hussain Haqqani, if it is proved that he is doing the acts and deeds prejudicial to the integrity, security and sovereignty of Pakistan at the behest of President Asif Ali Zardari, and all those who are involved in the scandal must be tried for high treason.
He pleaded for a court's direction to the respondents to restrict the movement of Americans and all other diplomats to the diplomatic areas. He also questioned whether the Memorandum is not against the sovereignty of Pakistan and whether it tantamounts to high treason.
