US Consul General in Karachi, William Martin, has handed over special equipment and vehicles to Sindh Police under "police assistance programme" at a simple ceremony at Police Headoffice here on Saturday. Sindh Home Minister Manzoor Wassan, Inspector General Sindh Mushtaq Shah, Director Afghanistan and Pakistan Affairs, Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs US State Department, Steven Kraft, and senior police officials were also present on the occasion.
Talking to media, William Martin said that United States will soon initiate a training programme for police investigators, prosecutors and judges to strengthen investigation side of police department for maintaining rule of law. He said police work in difficult circumstances in Karachi and USA will impart modern training to police personnel and bomb disposal squad and continue to provide latest equipment so that they can maintain peace and stability in the metropolis.
He also lauded the services of Crime Investigation Department (CID) in its heroic fight to stamp out violent extremism, which has claimed far too many lives in Karachi. The peace and security in Karachi will open economic and commercial activities and attract much needed foreign investment in the city and rule of law and peaceful stability will enable private investors to create jobs and energy, he noted.
Earlier, in his remarks at the formal hand over of police equipment, William Martin said that with the help of better equipment and modern training, the police can better meet the extraordinary challenges of law and order in Karachi. Martin said it was the first instalment of wide range of equipment with more to come. These included voice-stress analysers, bomb detection equipment, bullet proof vests, helmets, armoured personnel carriers, night vision goggles, vehicles, handcuffs, batons, binoculars and megaphones.
