Punjab livestock and dairy development department secretary Hamid Yaqoob Sheikh said the government is working for the legislation to check uncertified usage of male animals' semen in the province. He was addressing at the inaugural session of one-day national workshop on "Strategies on Improvement in Livestock Reproduction" on Saturday at University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) main auditorium.
The national conference was sponsored by Higher Education Commission, Pakistan Science Foundation and organised by UVAS department of theriogenalogy and Society for Animal Reproduction of Pakistan (SARP). Washington State University's Dr Mushtaq A. Memon also delivered lecture through video conference.
Hamid Yaqoob Sheikh said the legislation is necessary to improve the quality of livestock reproduction and in this regard Punjab Semen Quality Control Act 2010 was approved by the Punjab cabinet in April this year. He said that this law would pave the way to increase animal milk and meat potential and farmer economics. He also said that the livestock department would include the workshop recommendations in livestock breeding policy being formulated.
UVAS vice-chancellor Professor Dr Muhammad Nawaz said that it is the need of the hour to bring about a revolution in universities through the promotion of research culture that could cope with global scale competition relating to knowledge. He said that university has got maximum Rs 572 million from national and international agencies through competition, though its budget is only Rs 430 million. Dr Nawaz said the department of theriogenalogy and department of animal reproduction are integrated to improve the breed. He said animal reproduction should be enhanced by ensuring quality of semen, educating artificial insemination workers and selection of genetic breed and animal nutrition and farm management.
