A two-day annual international conference on dynamics of change in conflict societies with Pakhtun region in perspective organised by Department of Political Science, University of Peshawar began on Monday. Khyber Pakhtunkwa, Governor, Barrister Masood Kausar was the chief guest at inaugural session.
Addressing on the occasion, he said that Pakhtun with numerous groups has rich and distinct cultural history, which were known because of extraordinary literary skills, contributing to the development of Afghanistan and Pakistan in a positive manner. He said that Pakistan in general, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Fata in particular are playing frontline role in war against terrorism, which was causing economy instability, and destroying socio-political structure of people.
He, however, said the Peace had restored to some extent at the Pukhtun soil and most of institutions have functional position. He said that the research work on critical issues has identified the root causes of issues and problems confronting the Pukhuns in the region.
Barriester Kausar lauded the role of University of Peshawar for arranging such debates and discussion on complex issues, like this conference will prove to develop a solid and concrete recommendations for utmost tackling the issues, facing Pukhtuns society. He welcomed the step of the administration of University of Peshawar and Chairman Political Science Department Professor Dr A Z Hilali, and Hans Seidel Foundation Germany for arranging the conference.
Barrister Masood Kausar directed the organisers of the conference to provide copies of the presentations and other policy matters discussed on the topic for implementation in a possible incorporation in the future policy making. In his welcome address Vice Chancellor, UoP Dr Azmat Hayat Khan stressed the need for maximum role of universities in conflict resolution and should play as advisory body for policymakers amicable solution of problems.
Azmat Hayat said history taught us complex situation over past in developed world with worst times. "We need to face the prevailing situation with a great spirit of patriotism to make a history", he added. Participants of the conference in their presentations said that despite various changes and transformation major ethnic and identity constructs of Pakhtun society have not only remained intact but they have resisted the process of Talibanization and militancy.
