The issuance of unverified Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) is the major source of criminal activities and a hurdle to investigation of the cases. This was observed at a high level meeting of Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) presided by Sindh Governor, Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan at Governor's House here, according to a statement issued on Sunday by the spokesman of Governor's House.
"Over 90 percent of the crimes are committed through mobile phones but it becomes difficult to trace out the culprits due to lack of sophisticated equipment and computer software," the meeting's participants observed. It was decided that with the assistance of the private sector, the budgetary problems of CPLC would be resolved by the provincial government. The participants emphasised that the CPLC should be further modernised and equipped with all necessary supplies to cater to the current needs in tackling criminal cases.
The advisory board members stressed the need to approach the federal government for amendment in the laws pertaining to the evidence and the witness protection law which, in majority of cases, tends to protect the criminals at present.
On the occasion, Sindh governor issued directives for enhanced co-ordination between the officials of the Emergency Control Centre of City District Government Karachi (CDGK) and police headquarters. "This will help towards obtaining immediate results to solve the cases by CPLC," the Governor observed. The governor, while hailing the CPLC, observed that despite resource constraints, the committee's performance was satisfactory as far as the cases of kidnapping for ransom are concerned. The meeting was attended by CPLC Chief, Ahmed Chinoy, Federal Minister for Petroleum, Dr Asim Hussain, former Justice Nasir Aslam Zahid, prominent businessmen, Barrister Farogh Nasim, playwright Fatima Suriya Bajiya and senior police officers of the city.
