Zainab murder case: IG submits report in SC

Published January 11, 2018 Updated January 12, 2018

ISLAMABAD: Inspector General of Police Punjab Arif Nawaz Khan Thursday submitted its report to the Supreme Court and said no accused was yet arrested, however Rs 10 million award money had been announced for those who could help in pointing out the culprits.

The report was submitted in compliance with Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar suo motu notice of the rape and murder of a girl Zainab in Kasur.

The report said that geofencing data from the area was acquired and all the resources were being used to arrest the culprit. So far 227 persons had been interrogated in the case.

DNA samples collected from her body have been sent to a laboratory in Lahore for forensic testing. A post-mortem examination of the victim, who went missing on January 4 and found dead on a trash heap by police on January 9, suggested she was raped and strangled to death, the report added.

“A large number of CCTV footages of various cameras installed on nearby roads/streets comprising long hours of videos were worked out by deputing a number of personnel. The IT team managed to work out video footage of unidentified suspect carrying the abductee girl in a remote area of Peru Wala Road, Kasur,” the report said.

“House-to-house search with the help of last crime scene witness was carried out to identify the culprits,” the report added.

An initial probe indicates that a ‘serial killer’ was behind all the eight cases reported in the district since 2015.
