The Senate on Thursday deferred voting on 'The Carriage by Air Bill, 2011' till today (Friday) on the request of Jamaat-e-Islami Senator Professor Khurshid Ahmed. Federal Minister for Defence Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar moved the Bill in the House for passage but Chairman Senate Farooq H Naik deferred it till Friday on the request of Professor Khurshid Ahmed after amendments were proposed by Wasim Sajjad.
The Minister did not oppose the amendments. The main purpose of amendments in the fifth schedule of the Bill to increase insurance covering liability and compensation of a passenger in case of death due to incident of destruction or damage of carriage by air is to increase from one million to five million rupees.
Waseem Sajjad said that there was a need to amend the sixth and fifth schedule of the bill. He said that in the previous law relating to domestic carriage by air of 1967, the liability was only Rs 39,000. He said that the Parliament should also make legislation to provide maximum facilities to passenger and to avoid delaying of flight. He said that a person faced loss and miss important business meeting due to delay of flight. Later the Chairman deferred the Bill till today on the request of Professor Khurshid Ahmed.
