THE RUPEE: firmness seen on open market

Published Updated

The rupee extended its fall versus dollar on the currency market on Friday in process of trading, dealers said. The rupee was nearly unchanged in relation to dollar as it did not show any change for buying at 86.70 while it slipped by one paisa for selling at 86.75, they said.
INTERBANK MARKET RATES: In the final Asian trade euro clung to gains eked out in volatile overnight trade but looked increasingly vulnerable as European leaders remained deeply divided ahead of a weekend summit on the region's debt crisis.
The euro, last at $1.3786, has kept well off its nine-month low hit in early October, however, despite a widening in spreads on yields between safe-haven German Bunds and other European countries. The yuan closed a touch higher versus dollar on Friday after the People's Bank of China set a slightly stronger mid-point in the wake of a fall in the US Dollar Index.
The yuan remained more than 400 pips lower than its record trading high hit on October 11 right before the US Senate granted approval to a bill aimed at pressing China to let the yuan appreciate faster, saying an artificially weak yuan was robbing jobs in the United States. The US dollar versus the Indian rupee was available at Rs 49.80, and it was also trading against the Malaysian ringgit at 3.1505.
OPEN MARKET RATES: No respite was seen in the rupee's fall versus dollar in the open market, shedding 40 paisa for buying and selling at 87.80 and at 88.10, they added. The rupee also followed the same pattern in terms of euro, losing Rs 1.38 for buying and selling at Rs 120.71 and Rs 121.21, they said.
