Sindh province is blessed with abundant coal reserves. I firmly believe that these coal reserves are strategic resource of utmost national importance. Over 90% of Pakistan's coal reserves are in Sindh. Utilisation of these coal resources for power generation to meet Pakistan's growing energy needs is a matter of national prosperity.
In order to exploit Sindh's Thar Coal reserves for power generation's. Sindh Board of Investment in collaboration with Coal & Energy Development Department is organising first ever International Coal Conterence-2011 where foreign delegates, government functionaries and all stakeholders involved in coal value chain are expected to participate. I welcome the foreign delegates who are travelling from across the world to attend this conference.
Thar region is blessed with 175 billion tons coal resources and not even a 1% of these resources are exploited yet. These reserves are reasonably close to the major population and load centers of Hyderabad and Karachi. Thar Coal reserves are spread over a single geographically contained area of 9000 sq km.
In order to exploit Thar Coal resources on a fast track basis for power generation, the Federal Government and Provincial Government of Sindh have established Thar Coal & Energy Board (TCEB). The TCEB under the Chairmanship of Chief Minister Sindh is working to achieve the goal of developing Thar Coal and to ensure energy security. Further, use of Thar reserves in power generation would help in reducing excessive reliance on imported fuel thereby reducing the pressure on balance of payments of the country.
The development of infrastructure in Thar region is at highest priority set by Sindh government. We are inviting investors to invest in infrastructure projects which include: Road Networking, Electricity, Communication, Water Supply and Railway Line to materialise the vision.
Prospective investors are invited to come forward and invest in Coal mine development and Coal power projects as well as infrastructure project in Thar. On behalf of Sindh government I assure them my fullest support and implementation of their projects. I would also encourage prospective investor to come up with the proposals focusing on maximum utilisation of indigenous Thar Coal resources.
