South Africa's Rabada ends Sharma resistance

Published January 6, 2018 Updated January 6, 2018 02:25pm

CAPE TOWN: Kagiso Rabada ended a determined vigil by Rohit Sharma as India made slow progress on the second day of the first Test against South Africa at Newlands on Saturday.

India were 76 for four at lunch, adding just 48 runs for the loss of one wicket in 25 overs against South Africa's four-pronged pace attack during the morning.

India's hopes of overhauling South Africa's first innings total of 286 rested largely with Cheteshwar Pujara, who was unbeaten on 26, scored off 91 balls.

Sharma was leg before wicket to 22-year-old Rabada after he and Pujara had defied the bowlers for 81 minutes on a pitch which helped the bowlers far less than it did on the first day.

Vernon Philander and Dale Steyn started the day with four successive maiden overs and Philander went on to bowl five maidens before he conceded a single in the last over of a six-over spell.

Sharma scored 11 runs off 59 balls before he was beaten by a fast delivery from Rabada angled in towards his stumps. A review of umpire Michael Gough?s decision was unsuccessful.
