Flashfloods likely in drains, streams

Federal Flood Commission (FFC) on Tuesday said flash flooding is expected in local nullahs and streams due to heavy to very heavy falls over eastern Balochistan. River Indus is in low flood stage at Kotri Barrage with rising trend while all other main rivers Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej are flowing normal.
The actual river flows and reservoir elevations indicate that both Tarbela and Mangla Dams have attained their maximum conservation levels of 1550.00 feet and 1210.00 feet respectively. Any monsoon rain from now onwards may cause flooding as there is no more storage capacity available in these major reservoirs, said a daily FFC report issued here.
Today's combined live storage position of Tarbela, Chashma & Mangla reservoirs is 11.907 MAF as compared to last year's 11.753 MAF. According to the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), Lahore, yesterday's monsoon low over southern Rajasthan (India) and adjoining areas has moved westwards and lies over central Sindh. Moist current from Arabian Sea is penetrating Sindh and Punjab up-to 5000 feet. A trough of westerly wave is moving over northern parts of Afghanistan.
The FFD predicted fairly widespread thunderstorm/rain with heavy to very heavy falls at isolated places over Sindh and eastern Balochistan, whereas scattered thunderstorm/rain with isolated heavy falls may also occur over southern Punjab including Bahawalpur division during the next 24 hours.
Isolated thunderstorm/rain is also expected over Kashmir, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and northern Punjab including Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Lahore and Gujranwala Divisions, besides upper catchments of Rivers Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej during the same period. Significant rainfall events reported during the past 24 hours include: Mirpurkhas = 190 mm, Hyderabad = 153 mm, Tandojam = 119 mm, Dadu = 115 mm, Karachi = 86 mm, Thatta = 73 mm, Sh. Benazirabad = 75 mm, Badin = 60 mm, Chhor = 56 mm, Padidan = 42 mm, Parachinar = 29 mm, Dratian = 26 mm and Islamabad = 10 mm.
