Coffee growing areas in Brazil will see light rains during the week, forecaster Somar predicted Monday, topping up soil moisture after weeks of dryness and fortifying trees carrying a large, ripening crop. A cold front will push rain across the south-eastern coffee belt but only until Thursday or Friday when it will turn dry again. It is expected to remain dry for most of next week also.
A polar air mass which will sweep into the southeastern coffee belt by the end of the week "is not intense enough to bring risk to the coffee trees" Somar said in a daily weather bulletin. The off-year crop this year in the biennial high-low cycle, is expected to produce 43.5 million 60-kg bags of beans, according to government crop supply agency Conab, while exporters are working with a figure of 45 million bags or more.
