A parliamentary panel on Monday observed that obtaining quality education still remains a challenge for students in rural areas of federal capital, where government schools lack the very basic amenities. The National Assembly standing committee on cabinet secretariat, which met here with Nawab Abdul Ghani Talpur in the chair, noted that the government schools located right under the nose of the capital, needed special attention of the government to improve their standards.
The committee directed secretary Capital Administration and Development Division (CA&DD) to take notice of dilapidated condition of government schools in the suburbs of Islamabad. Tariq Fazal Chaudhary, a member of the parliamentary panel, said in addition to the lack of computers, schools in rural areas of capital also lack electricity, potable water, furniture and transportation facilities.
Talpur directed the CA&DD Secretary Junaid Iqbal Chaudhry to submit the report to the committee as soon as possible. Junaid Iqbal briefed the committee that his department was established through cabinet division's notification, dated March 31 this year in pursuance of 18th amendment to the constitution.
He said told the committee that on the directives of Prime Minister Gilani, 50 schools would be upgraded to the level of model schools for which training of 400 teachers and 50 head teachers was being arranged. He said the federal government was trying to improve the education level of the Balochistan province while the capital administration would select 10 students from each district of Balochistan next year who would be admitted in the models schools of the federal capital. He said that a total of five students from each district hade been selected by the federal government from Balochistan and they were studding in the models schools of the federal capital.
