ART FACTS: A new dimension

After viewing Aliya Faizi's new dimension of work with a blend of pottery and contemporary figurative art in a unique style and colours at Indus Gallery, Karachi it is evident that she is accelerating in her genre. In her recent paintings she simply created impressive images using bright colours, red, blue, yellow and a pinch of greens. She paints beautiful vessels, vases, pots in various designs and texture with strong brush strokes.
Her figurative and non-representational work emerged along with basic forms of square, circles and triangles showing versatility of handling the subject and paints and composition. Her women figures are devoid of facial features hence no expressions can be observed giving an impression of women's life full of sacrifices thus she portrays a general perception that women are without feelings and emotion less.
Carefully dealing with the subject her paintings depicts simplicity even in all forms of work. Some of her paintings with powerful strokes reveal cubism style. Her canvases are small trying to capture a lot in a limited space. Pottery is both object and subject for her and pots and vessels seem to engulf her canvases. The line work is balanced with the splashes of colours, the vessels of clay with woman figure shows association of human and clay.
This time she brought new ideas and creative approaches to the show. She reflected a unique way of viewing the world around her. She highlights personal presentation by creating a diversity of perspectives and interpretations thus engaging the viewer's interest.
Through depiction of physical layers she creates an imagery of self-constructed narratives she portrays the form of clay in pottery - vases, pots, goblets and jugs in various shapes along with a woman image placed as a personal symbol in the paintings. The innovative and attractive colourful art pieces highlighted hard work of the artist. Her works are in a broad range of colours and tones but tends to focus on one range of hues in each painting from hot reds to creamy pale yellows, olive greens and darker blue with contrasting strokes of colours.
Though her imagery seems to be the same as her previous works, the only visible difference is the strong gestured strokes and texture. In her new collection of work the compositions along with women figure round shapes symbolising the moon and the sun in white and red appears on the canvas.
Using diverse shapes and colours she constructed out her own vision of the world. Her work captures a world of elements which are some what abstracted but revealed and connected. There are no hidden features in her paintings. She has changed her approach and technique in the present work.
She acquired diploma in Fine Arts from Mashkoor Art School in 1998. Though she paints the same subject from the beginning of her career each one of her paintings in different from the other. I think now is the time for her to rediscover her artistic vocabulary and move beyond the complexities of clay. She must explore new creative vistas for her expressions.
