German Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative allies want national parliaments to have a bigger say in decisions to bail out eurozone countries, one of its leaders said on Friday. With concern growing in Merkel's coalition at the prospect of funding a second Greek rescue, as well as aiding Ireland and Portugal, the Christian Social Union (CSU) is already mulling an internal party vote on the matter.
The CSU, the Bavarian sister party of Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU), is the second coalition party to urge more parliamentary control of the European Stability Mechanism (ESM) - a permanent rescue scheme coming into effect from 2013. The Free Democrats have made a similar demand. "We won't accept a division of labour where some incur debts and others pay them," said CSU Secretary-General Alexander Dobrindt. He told a meeting of party leaders in Andechs, which will be addressed by Merkel on Saturday, that his party would only support the rescue mechanism if member states got a full say in any decision to use it.
