Mukhtar Mai challenges Supreme Court verdict: criminal review plea filed

A criminal review petition has been filed in the Supreme Court wherein Mukhtar Mai challenged the apex court verdict through her counsel Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan, praying to form a larger bench on Thursday. Mukhtar Mai case was initially registered against 14 individuals, suspected of being involved in the rape of the petitioner in June 2002 under the influence of a local Panchayat that allegedly held her brother responsible for illicit relations with a women of another clan.
As many as 13 accused were acquitted by the Lahore High Court Multan bench except Abdul Khaliq who was awarded life imprisonment, consequently the acquittal was challenged in the apex court of Pakistan where LHC's original verdict was upheld. Counsel of Mukhtiar Mai Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan challenged the court's judgement of April 21 through filing a review petition wherein he has contended that the petitioner is aggrieved and dissatisfied with the findings of the apex court, recorded in the titled criminal appeal.
It has been pleaded in the review petition that all the respondents/accused who were named by the complainant deserve to be convicted and sentenced after the review of both the judgements (of the learned majority as well as of the learned minority) to the extent necessary so as to result in the acceptance of the appeals filed by the petitioner before the apex court. Besides, the petitioner prayed to the apex court to review and recall the judgement under review in the very interest of justice and grant relief.
