US Special representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Ambassador Marc Grossman called on President Asif Ali Zardari at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Thursday. US Ambassador in Islamabad Cameron P Munter was also present during the meeting besides other US officials.
Pakistan side included Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, Federal Minister for Finance, A Rehman Malik, Federal Minister for Interior, Hina Rabbani Khar, MOS for Foreign Affairs, and Hussain Haqqani, Pakistan Ambassador in US.
Today's meeting was in the context of follow up of Senator John Kerry's meeting with the President on May 16 in which the two sides agreed to put the relations back on track and that the relations should go forward on the basis of mutual respect, mutual trust and mutual interest.
BR staff reporter from Islamabad adds: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani on Thursday held two separate meetings with the United States Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan and the Chinese Deputy Chief of Staff Xinjiang Military Command on Thursday. Marc Grossman, United States Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan called on Chief of Army Staff, General Kayani at General Headquarters.
During the meeting, the visiting dignitary discussed future of Pak-US engagement concerning reconciliation process in Afghanistan. It is widely believed that the aim of Grossman's meeting with the COAS was stepping up efforts to smooth over a crisis sparked by the US operation that killed Osama bin Laden in Abbottabad. This was the second high-profile American visit to Pakistan in days after Senator John Kerry's visit to Islamabad.
In the second meeting, a Chinese delegation headed by Major General Zhou Hongtao, Deputy Chief of Staff Xinjiang Military Command met with COAS. The delegation is on an official visit to Pakistan for discussing modalities of forthcoming Pak-China joint military exercise.
