International Museum Day will be observed all over the world on Wednesday May 18. It had been organising regularly since 1977. Peshawar Museum will also celebrate it on that day. It has arranged a photographic exhibition of archaeological sites and buildings which will reflect the rich cultural heritage of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Peshawar Museum education service has gained momentum.
Schools, colleges and various education institutions are invited for exhibition. It will be displayed on the first floor of the museum, which will be inaugurated by Saleh Mohammad Khan, Director, Directorate of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at 9.30 am and will remain open for the visitors till 6 pm.
Peshawar Museum was constructed in 1905 as Victoria Memorial Hall and was converted into a Museum in November 1907. To celebrate the event free entry to the museum will be provided to the visitors and guided tours will be conducted. Peshawar Museum is famous all over the world for its rich collection of the Buddhist art of Gandhara. It has some of the best coin collection.
The Islamic gallery contains manuscripts, calligraphic specimens, paintings and beautiful blue glazed tiles. The ethnological material depicts collection of Kalash life like their costumes, wooden effigies and Jewellery. Other tribal material contains utensils, dresses, pistols, guns, daggers, swords, chain armors etc.
The purpose of this Museum day is to create awareness among the masses of different countries for their rich cultural heritage. It will create love among them for preservation of archaeological sites from where the material has been collected and displayed in the museums for the study of the common man.
