Easyjet flights to and from Berlin were hit by cancellations and delays on Saturday, as the British budget airline was targeted by German strike action in a pay dispute. German trade union Verdi called the industrial action, after months of pay negotiations had failed to achieve an agreement. They said that around 60 employees took part, including pilots and flight attendants.
The strike affected flights from 6 am (0400 GMT) to Spain, Italy, Sweden and Greece. It ended at 12pm, but an airline spokeswoman said delays should be expected throughout the afternoon. A total of ten flights to or from Berlin's Schoenefeld airport were cancelled, while others experienced "significant delays," according to Easyjet's website.
The strike was announced just 15 minutes ahead of time. The airline sought to inform passengers by sms or email. "EasyJet is disappointed that despite a revised pay deal being offered, an agreement has not yet been reached with the verdi union which represents the airline's crew based in Berlin which has resulted in a crew strike," read a statement on their website. Verdi spokesman Holger Roessler said Easyjet had not shown any flexibility in wage negotiations. "We hope now for a truly new offer," Roessler said. "We are certainly willing to compromise." Easyjet employs around 240 flight attendants and 110 pilots in Berlin. Saturday's strike followed earlier industrial action in April.
