The University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) will introduce two breeds of hens in a couple of years to increase eggs production in the country, said, Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Iqrar Ahmed Khan at a two-day seminar on 'Livestock Breeding Policy and Strategy' organised by the Department of Animal Breeding and Genetic, here on Friday.
The first session was presided over by UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Khan while Director Breed improvement, Dr Tasneem Akhtar was the chief guest on the occasion. Dr khan said that in the past they had been getting 100 eggs from a hen in a year but due to genetic improvement, now a hen gives 300 eggs annually. He said that with the improvement in breed and its promotion, the country could earn huge foreign exchange. He said in France, the scientists have produced a breed of hen with the transfer of genetic characteristics of the sub-continent hens.
The vice chancellor stressed the need to capture international Halal meat market which has great potential. The county could earn foreign exchange with the promotion of good breed, he added. He said the universities play a pivotal role and work as a think-tank in mapping out policies in any country. He said that keeping in mind, the university often organises seminar, conference and other interacting programme with the stakeholders of the countries to know about their problems and get feedback.
