Sense must prevail in Kabul

There is jubilation in Kabul over what has gone on in Abbottabad on May 2. Karzai and company are calling the shots and seem to be settling scores. The admittance of intelligence failure by Pakistan army chief, PAF chief, FO and now PM Gilani is taken as Pakistan's weakness, questioning its capacity and capability to guard the territories. Saner elements around the world and within America are raising voices in favour of Pakistan, so they are too in Afghanistan.
Pakistan has time and again proved its mettle in times of trial. Almost 90% of war has been fought by the Pakistan armed forces, and equally huge are its sacrifices. No aid can match the lives of over 3,500 military personnel and over 30,000 innocent civilians, which this war has devoured so far. There is no end to it.
Pakistan has in the last four decades hosted millions of Afghan refugees and a major chunk of them are still in Pakistan. President Karzai and hundreds of other prominent leaders must remember their leisure time in Pakistan, a country they used as a launching pad. They took off from here. Their children and families are still enjoying good education and the comforts of life. We the people of this unfortunate country shared our bread with them. Our economy, society, culture, the future of our children suffered because of them. The menace of Kalashnikovs, the drug business, and now terrorism has played havoc with us. Karzai has always joined the US course of 'do more,' singing to the tune of the Indians and the Pentagon. What else do they need from us?
The admittance of intelligence shortcomings is indicative of a big heart, because in our security forces' cap there are many feathers of success and triumph. Had Pakistan not been capable or trustworthy, it could never have got the frontline ally's status. A fact which Pakistan proved. A fact which the Americans widely endorsed. Wasn't it Pakistan that handed over to America over 600 wanted men, most of them dreaded terrorists, like Khalid Sheikh Muhammad, Ramzi Yousaf, Aimal Kansi, Mullah Dad, etc. Hundreds of terrorists were killed in operations including Abul Lais al Libi through joint intelligence sharing. The May 2 Abbottabad operation materialised after a tip-off by ISI, a fact admitted by Obama, Hillary and others. Could the CIA men operate without Pakistan's help?
Now if the Kabul government, too, has to make a mockery of our long and continuous help then the Afghan people must realise that their troubles are not over. They need Pakistan without which they can't survive. There is failure on the part of our government in Islamabad as well. Our civil and military leadership must pass on to Kabul a clear message asking who is suffering the most in this endless war, who is going to benefit the most if peace returns to this region? The so-called TTP, and other jihadi groups, which the Afghan side is backing, only to play with the lives of millions of innocent Pakistanis, are benefiting whom?
The former head of the Afghan intelligence RAAM, Amrullah Saleh admitted that the Afghan army's regular troops in plain clothes had been fighting against the Pakistan army in Bajaur and elsewhere. Afghanistan airlifted Hakimullah Mehsud and 1,500 fighters from South Waziristan. Nato and ANA withdrew eight of their posts to give them safe passage. There is no manning by the ANA or the Nato 60-km deep within Afghanistan, while the Pakistan army is standing right on the Durand Line. Pakistan's request to fence the border was conspicuously turned down. Nato forces even resorted to bombing our checkposts killing army soldiers. And drone attacks continue unabated, which have claimed more than 3000 innocents' lives. All this is going on at the behest of Afghan government. The big question is if the Americans are to leave, what will Kabul and Islamabad resort to save the future of this region? Can we afford an endless conflict to weaken us bit by bit.
