Wheat growers have expressed their reservations on the procurement policy of the provincial government and alleged that it is causing irreparable loss to small farmers. The views were expressed by a representative delegation of farmers from Kasur, Sheikhupura, Nankana and Gujranwala during a meeting with the Central President Kisan Board Pakistan (KBP) Sardar Zafar Hussein, said a spokesman of KBP, here on Tuesday.
Members of the delegation said that although Chief Minister Punjab, Food Minister and officers of food department are saying that exploitation of small growers would not be allowed, in reality, small growers have already suffered loss due to the non co-operative attitude of the food department and faulty procurement policy. They claimed that majority of the farmers has sold wheat at rupees 800 per maund and if government fails to resolve the issue, the rest may be compelled to sell their produce at Rs 750 per maund.
Addressing the delegation, KBP President said that he urges chief minister and food minister Punjab to take action against those officials of the food and revenue departments that are discouraging the growers. He warned that KBP would be forced to give a protest call if government fails to take timely action to resolve the hardships being faced by the farmers.
