US wants cooperative ties: White House

The United States wants Pakistan to grant access to Osama bin Laden's three wives to gain more information about the al Qaeda leader's network, White House spokesman Jay Carney said on Monday. Strains have developed between the two governments over the US killing of bin Laden last week with Pakistan charging the United States violated its sovereignty when a US strike team shot bin Laden to death at his Pakistani home.
"We believe it is very important to maintain a co-operative relationship with Pakistan, precisely because it's in our national security interests to do so," Carney told a news briefing. Carney said it was hoped that the two countries would be able to work through their differences, but he said the United States had nothing to apologise for in the raid on bin Laden's compound. He said the United States is "very interested" in gaining access to bin Laden's wives.
