Though Pakistan Electric Power Company (Pepco) is struggling to increase power generation and improve distribution system, yet the hot and dry weather has frustrated its efforts, as electricity demand soared to 17,874 MW on Thursday, an increase of almost 1,000 MW in a day.
Reporting power situation of the country, a Pepco spokesman said here on Thursday that the Company added about 500 MW electricity to its national grid system, 250 MW from its hydel power units and 250 MW IPPs contributors. He said Pepco's hydel, thermal, IPPs and RPP components produced 12,272 MW electricity, as against 11753 MW on Wednesday. However the electricity demand spiked up to 17,874 MW, as against Wednesday's demand of 16,997 MW, widening the gap between demand and supply to 5602 MW, again plunging the country in 10 to 15 hours outages in urban and rural areas, respectively.
He said hydel powerhouses at Tarbela, Mangla, Ghazi Barotha, Warsak, Chashma etc produced 4657 MW electricity against their capacity of 6400 MW during the peak monsoon season.Indus River System Authority (Irsa) is releasing 51,000 cusecs water from Tarbela dam, and 50,000 cusecs water down stream the Mangla dam on river Jhelum to generate maximum electricity from hydel sources.
With increased supply of furnace oil to the Independent Power Producers, IPPs have also geared up their electricity production to the level of 6071 MW to bridge the gap between the supply and demand. Pepco supplied 750 MW electricity to power deficit KESC. However, after a new spell of dust storms and light rains during the next two days, which are likely to fall the temperature by 3 to 5 degrees, in the upper regions of the country, the electricity demand is likely to drop up to 500 MW.
