Pemra told to check objectionable content

National Assembly's Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting on Wednesday directed Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) to take effective steps within one month to stop vulgar and objectionable content on private satellite TV channels and cable networks across the country.
The committee meeting chaired by Belum Hasnain, MNA was discussing the matters related to performance of Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority here. Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan also attended the meeting. Acting Chairman Pemra Dr Abdul Jabbar said that digitalisation of cable network was vital to effectively monitor the content being shown by cable operators in various parts of the country.
Additional Secretary Information Shah Zaman said that India has banned all Pakistani channels on their cable networks but in Pakistan Indian TV channels are shown illegally. Dr Jabbar said that recently Pemra has taken steps against illegal display of Indian channels and transmission of vulgar programmes. Belum Hasnain said that objectionable content shown by cable operators and satellite TV channels was leaving negative impact on the new generation.
