The Lahore High Court (LHC) adjourned to May 13 for further arguments the proceedings in six identical petitions challenging process for appointment of six public sector universities vice chancellors and composition of "search committee", tasked for the appointments. The court adjourned the hearing till next date of hearing as law officer appeared sought time to submit his arguments.
Earlier, para wise comments from Punjab government were submitted before the court wherein it stated that the search committee was inviting only those candidates who meet the set criteria for the appointments. It said the Committee did not invite the petitioners for interviews as they academic credentials were not up the required criteria. The reply said the candidates holding Ph.D degrees from top 500 foreign and local universities were being short-listed.
Advocate Rana Asadullah Khan representing two of the petitioners prayed to the court to stay the proceedings of the search committee till final decision on the petitioners. The court, however, turned down the request and observed that the court will get its order implemented even after completion of appointment process by the search committee. Petitions were filed by Dr Hassan Amir Shah of government college university Lahore, Bushra Khan of Lahore college for women university and others.
The petitioners had applied for the posts of vice chancellors and later challenged the alleged changing in the advertised criteria for the said posts. They also assailed the composition of search committee saying there were no rules, regulations and policy guidelines for selection and appointment of its members.
