Seven cops wounded in police station blasts

At least seven policemen were wounded in a series of explosions inside Gulbahar Police Station on main G. T Road here on Monday, police and rescue officials said. The condition of the two of the injured police personnel is stated to be serious.
The blasts destroyed two rooms on the first floor of the police station and smashed windowpanes of the entire building. Talking to journalists, Capital City Police Officer, Peshawar Liaquat Ali ruled out any sabotage act, saying that as per preliminary investigation the explosions were caused by either gas filled in a gutter or short circuiting. He said that blasts had occurred inside a store of electric gadgets. He said that there was no chance of sabotage act because the store was locked. He avoided giving further details about the gadgets stored in the room.
However, another senior police official on condition of anonymity said that the room was under the supervision of Bomb Disposal Unit, where very costly detectors, bomb disposal suits, bomb locators, x-ray machine, detectors and other valuable items donated by donor agencies were stored. He said that there were several bomb disposal suits and per suit valued about Rs 4 millions and all of the suits stored in the room gutted.
The official said it might have happened due to negligence. He said that it was a mysterious blast and he could not comment on it. However, an official of the Bomb Disposal Unit said that the fire might have caused due to electric short circuit. He also confirmed that there were precious items.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), traffic, who is also an eye witness said that he was sitting in his office on the second floor along the police station when he heard a loud explosion followed by five other blasts. He said that the intensity of the first blast was severe.
The injured have been identified as Jahangir Khan son of Jahan Shah, Mohammad Israil son of Noor Mohammad, Nisar Khan son of Saleemullah Khan, Arid Khan son of Sardar Khan, Feroz Shah son of Subhan Shah, Mohammad Ayaz and Alamzeb Khan. The injured were rushed to Lady Reading Hospital by the rescuers of 1122. No case was registered till filing of this report.
