Despite tall claims by the authorities concerned to take stern measures against the operators of gambling den where a blast on Thursday claimed 19 lives, the Sindh police have charged its owner Ejaz Memon with a fine of Rs 200 only besides laying off one of its official Waseem over patronising this illicit business.
According to details, Napier police have registered a case under section 3/4 of Pakistan Gambling Act against the owner of den, Ejaz Memon and police cop Waseem. Sources said that they have just completed the formality by applying sections in which the accused could easily be granted bail after paying Rs 200 only. They said that although it was one of the biggest dens in Asia where millions of rupees were bet daily, the police department and several politicians were active to shelter the operators of this illicit business. However, DIG South Iqbal Mahmood dispelled the impression, saying that there would be no mercy to anybody, whose involvement was proved during investigation.
