At least 25 people including three women and five children were killed in US predator attack in Speenwam area of North Waziristan Agency. According to sources in Mir Ali, the unmanned planes targeted a house on Mir Ali-Tall Road in Hassankhel area of tehsil Speenwam of the agency, killing 25 persons including women and children on the spot and leaving several others injured.
There were also fears of increase in the number of casualties as the condition of some injured was stated to be critical. All political parties including ruling PPP condemned the attack and Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) of Imran Khan announced two-day sit-in against the US drone attacks in Peshawar on April 23 and 24.
The Friday drone attack in Speenwam was 17th of its nature in North Waziristan since the beginning of calendar year 2011. Reuters adds: The strike came two days after a visit to Islamabad by Admiral Mike Mullen, the top US military official, in which he expressed concern over links between Pakistani security agents and militants attacking US-led forces across the border in Afghanistan. An intelligence official in the region who declined to be identified said the house was being used as a militant hideout.
"They have surrounded the area and are not allowing anybody to go there," the intelligence official said, referring to militants. Twenty-five bodies had been recovered from the rubble and three women were among those killed, he said. Another official said some foreign militants were among the dead but their numbers and nationalities could not confirmed.
