The government is devolving the Higher Education Commission - a very destructive and risky decision. This action of the government is being criticised and opposed by almost all the citizens of Pakistan: students, teachers, and others. They are opposing this decision through the media, internet and rallies.
They are demanding an immediate reversal of the HEC devolution. There are many facts and figures to corroborate that the HEC has played a key role in improving the standard of higher education in Pakistan. Also, steps were taken for creating a culture of public lectures, debates and discussions on scientific, political or cultural issues. The HEC has opened the gates of scholarships for people to go abroad for doing research at the PhD level. There has been a phenomenal increase in the output of PhDs since the inception of the HEC. New equipments, buildings and laboratories were given to universities.
Now the government and is devolving the HEC and the control of affairs of the commission will be handed over to the provinces which will create further social disintegration. Also the educational system will be messy and chaotic. Degrees, diplomas and certificates awarded by any institution are only acceptable internationally, if it is recognised by the HEC. As a student, I would like to request the President and the Prime Minister to rescind the decision at the earliest.
