At a national-level condolence reference on Dr Nabi Bakhsh Baloch, organised by Pakistan Institute of National Affairs (Pina) in Lahore, speakers eulogised him as one of the greatest scholars, education researcher and living spirit of Pakistani unity.
They called for instituting chairs at various universities of Pakistan in memory of the scholar's unmatched contribution in the fields of history, literature, Sindhi language and education. The meeting also demanded that 100 great books on Islamic civilisation as conceived by Dr Baloch in Hijra Council should be published. It was also resolved that to keep the scholar's name alive in the memory of new generation, roads in big cities should be named after him.
The reference was presided over by Professor Dr Akram Chaudhry, former Vice Chancellor Sargodha University and addressed by scholars who came from Larkana, Hyderabad, Islamabad and other cities of Pakistan to pay homage to the late scholar. Introducing different dimensions of the reference, Secretary General Pina, Altaf Hasan Qureshee said that Dr Nabi Bakhsh Baloch was one of the founders of Pina and guided them as its chairman for last several years.
He had strong commitment to Pakistan and was a living symbol of national unity. Qureshee recalled that in his work, the scholar made creative efforts to integrate society on the fundamental principles of Holy Qur'an and projected message of love and harmony of Shah Abdul Lateef Bhittai in modern context.
He had great sense of history and culture and established through research that Sindhi language was not the product of Sanskrit language. He was of the firm view that to work for the unity and prosperity of Pakistan should be the sacred mission of every citizen.
Dr Ejaz Hasan Qureshi, Chairman Board of Urdu Digest narrated his experiences about 1945-46 elections, in which Muslim League in Sindh faced a critical situation. On Liaquat Ali Khan's appeal, students of Aligarh University stormed the province in batches and carried out canvassing en masse for Pakistan. Dr Nabi Bakhsh Baloch was the leader of their group and they travelled for two months from village to village in District Nawab Shah and convinced Sindhi Muslims to vote for Pakistan.
In his comments, Dr Akram Chaudhry said that Dr Nabi Bakhsh Baloch was a great man. He carried out documentation of work on Sindhi language. He suggested that we too should preserve indigenous wisdom available in the local dialects. Late Dr Baloch, a great disciple of Dr Abdul Aziz Memon, also made significant contribution in Arabic language. Dr Akram lamented that no serious effort has been made so far to standardise Urdu as national language.
Professor Muhammad Yousaf, Principal Cadet College, Larkana, Qasim Hyder, Director Allama Iqbal Open University, Islamabad, Engineer Muhammad Rashid Sheikh, author of books on Dr Baloch, Professor Dr Muhammad Saleem Mazhar, Head Persian Department, Punjab University, Dr Abdul Ghaffar Soomro, Federal Secretary Production, former Justice Dr Munir Ahmad Mughal also spoke on the occasion.-PR
