Parliamentary Secretary Health Punjab, Dr Saeed Elahi has said Punjab Institute of Mental Health (PIMH) will be upgraded to international standard. Dr Elahi further said that recommendations would be sent to the Chief Minister Punjab, Shahbaz Sharif for early construction of auditorium, gymnasium and women rehabilitation centre at PIMH.
He expressed these views while addressing the concluding ceremony of Annual Sports Day of PIMH, here on Saturday. Executive Director, Dr Nusrat Habib Rana, President Friends of PIMH, renowned columnist Munoo Bhai, Members of Patient Welfare Society, representatives of different NGOs, philanthropists and doctors, nurses and the patients attended the function.
Dr Rana highlighted the issues of mental health. She further said that socio-economic problems are also the reasons of surge in mental illness. She urged upon the media and the government to pay special attention for the solution of social problems. She stressed that media especially electronic media should air more programmes related to health.
While addressing the function, Munoo Bhai said that he had discussions with some philanthropists who assured to extend co-operation for the construction of women rehabilitation centre. Addressing the prize distribution ceremony, Dr Elahi said that Chief Minister Punjab, Shahbaz Sharif is giving special attention to the development of health sector and huge funds are being spent on the development of new infrastructure. He said that on the directions of the chief minister, free treatment and diagnostic facilities are being provided at government hospitals and for this purpose Rs 6 billion were allocated in the current fiscal year.
Dr Elahi appreciated the services of the doctors, nurses and paramedics of PIMH who were involved restlessly in the treatment and care of the mentally sick people. He said that the relatives of these people do not own these patients but the doctors and nurses of this institution celebrate their happy hours with these special persons. Dr Elahi was very much impressed by the discipline and interest shown by the patients in different sports activities. He said that the discipline and their devotion would encourage normal people and we have to learn good deeds from these inmates of PIMH. He appreciated the efforts of Dr Rana for making PIMH a model institution.
