Sindh Assembly on Monday passed a unanimous resolution to commemorate the 100th anniversary of International Women Day, demanding the repeal of all discriminatory laws against women. Women legislators said Pakistani women were superior to men in almost in every field of life and should be given ministries like home. Besides, they wanted to see a woman chief of army staff of the country in future.
Shazia Mari set forth the resolution in the house on the eve of World Women's Day to remember the women for their endeavour throughout the nation's brief history. Speaker Nisar Khohro allowed the signatory members of the resolution to support their motion with brief arguments as part of the session proceedings.
Mari said empowerment of 50 percent of women of the society would enable the nation to attain a robust growth and development. She said Benazir Bhutto - the late chairperson of PPP, had initiated a number of steps to empower Pakistan women. She stressed for change of mindset and for a greater acceptance of women as part of the society. Mari wanted the removal of all impediments in the way of women progress including ethnic, linguistic, educational, political, cultural and social. She paid tribute to Fatima Jinnah and Benazir Bhutto for their struggle to bring out the nation out of bias and prejudices against women in the society.
Farheen Mughal demanded women should be given high profile political role in the national affairs, saying Benazir Bhutto had proved to play a significant part and led the nation twice, as premier. Nusrat Saher Abbasi said women were today faced with severe hardships and discrimination in the society. She observed women's body organs were amputated and were beaten up to disgrace them, which should end.
She demanded the guarantee for the women's rights enshrined in the Constitution and religion Islam, saying men always praised women for their beauty but continued to deny their rights. She said it would be a scene to watch whether the men legislators would present the motion to remember women's day, next year.
Other women lawmakers blamed men for women's backwardness in the society, urging the elimination of karo kari (honour killing) tradition, laws and traditions against women. They said the government should introduce laws to protect women from domestic violence, ensure due share in inheritance, and trend like honour killing should be specified as crime or offence. Agha Siraj Durrani, Pir Mazharul Haq, Anwar Khan Maher, Sussui Palejo, Muhammad Rafiq Advocate, Tauqeer Fatima, Nurgis N D Khan, deputy speaker Shela Raza and Amanullah Mahsud also spoke in support of the resolution.
Meanwhile, Amanullah Mehsud of ANP presented a motion which the house unanimously passed condemning an unpleasant incident took place in Supreme Court premises in Islamabad, as the CEO of a private sport TV channel threatened and misbehaved with a lawyer. Pir Mazhar said the lawyers' respect should be upheld and their protection should be ensured, as they were the people exercising the law which provincial and national assemblies made. He said the house condemned the incident. Shazia Mari and Rafiq Advocate also spoke on the motion. Speaker adjourned the session till Thursday morning at 10 am and urged the members to qualify for their motion on Wednesday through balloting. He said the session would be held as for private members day.
