5.2-magnitude quake strikes Japan

A moderate 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck Japan on Sunday, geologists said, but there were no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami warning in place. The inland quake hit at a shallow depth 3.8 kilometres (2.4 miles), 54 kms west of Matsumoto in Honshu, Japan, at 05:38 (20:38 GMT Saturday), the United States Geological Survey said.
The epicentre of the quake was around 221 kms west of Tokyo. Around 20 percent of the world's most powerful earthquakes strike Japan, which sits on the "Ring of Fire" surrounding the Pacific Ocean. Tectonics experts have warned of a 70 percent chance that the "Big One" - a magnitude-seven earthquake or worse - will strike the greater Tokyo region, home to around 35 million people, within the next 30 years.
