Federal Minister for Information & Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan has dispelled the impression that there was a difference of opinion between Pakistan Peoples Party and the Government on the issue of Raymond Davis. She said that the statement given by Fauzia Wahab yesterday at Karachi Press Club has been presented as the stated policy of the PPP or the Government, which is not correct.
She said that the matter of Raymond Davis was of a sensitive nature vis-à-vis Pakistan-US relations and therefore needed to be handled scrupulously. She said that this was not the time to do politics as Pakistan may suffer its vital interests. The Minister said that the Presidential Spokesperson Farhatullah Babar has already clarified that the version of Fauzia Wahab on Raymond Davis was her personal and had nothing to do with the version of the government or the policy of the party. She said that the government and the PPP are on the same page on the issue of Raymond Davis.
Dr Firdous said that government's stance on the detained US national was very clear and would be decided by the Pakistani courts. "Raymond Davis, an accused of murdering two Pakistanis in Lahore has immunity or not, it would only be decided by courts and we will follow the verdict," she said."No individual can grant immunity to anyone, the courts in Pakistan are free and independent and they would decide the matter in due course of time", the Minister said. -PR
